I have been experiencing this problem as well. It's nasty as I have lost work-in-progress because of it. My setup is Ubuntu 8.04 with Compiz. I always have Firefox running (3.0.3 right now). The two cents I can add at the moment are that twice I have experienced this problem when I clicked on the edge of the "minimize" button on the titlebar in Firefox. Another other time was after have tabbed over from a full screen app and hit the "X" button on the titlebar. Two two described crashed occured just a few minutes apart.
