Looks like this is already enabled in the current Intrepid git tree:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/ubuntu-intrepid/debian/config$ grep -rn
"CONFIG_EXT4DEV_FS=" *
amd64/config:761:CONFIG_EXT4DEV_FS=m
i386/config:810:CONFIG_EXT4DEV_FS=m
You'll probably want to try one of the newer kernels, say 2.6.27-7 .
