I'm running into this issue as well with the latest 8.04 kernel upgrade,
2.6.24-21-generic. I have experience this failure twice after upgrading
from 2.6.24-19 to 2.6.24-21 over the weekend. (I'm not sure if this is
a coincidence or related to the 2.6.24-21 upgrade.)

In between these to failures I removed the t3g module and reloaded it, and ran
"
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart", which restored network access for a few
minutes before it failed again. I have rebooted and select the
2.6.24-19-generic kernel image and have not seen this problem again so far.

I am not ready to upgrade to 8.10 at this point, and am hoping that
since that 8.04 is a LTS release, more effort would be given to resolve
the problem in the current release (e.g. providing a backported a fix if
one is found)
