Gerhard, Can you tell me the exact driver you used the first time: Run gnome-cups-manager from a terminal, select the driver, please give the filename listed by "selected ppd file" to know the exact driver you used that didn't work. This information can be useful for other people with the same printer.
Your printer model HP LaserJet 4M Plus was added into foomatic-db after the release of Edgy. You could try one of the PCL based PPDs for similar printer model HP LaserJet 4M. The hpijs driver from HP LaserJet 4M should work. You could also try the ljet4 or ljet4d driver from HP LaserJet 4M.
