I was having a similar issue in 8.04, and noticed if you change some settings it's not as obvious. If you're still having this problem, go into System>Preferences>Appearance and click on the background tab. Under the wallpaper options, there should be an option that says "Colors-Solid Color" make that black, and then close that window. Then go to System>Administration>Login Window and click on the "local" tab. If you use a themed browser to log in, change the color underneath the themes to black and close the window. If you use a plain style, check the box for "color" underneath the background options, and set the color to black. Now close the window. Try restarting your computer, and rather than your screen flashing colors, it should just appear black instead, so it won't be obnoxious. Post back here, and let us know if that worked or not.
