Yes, this seems to mitigate the problem.

Now I only get login image > black > wallpaper. This is nice, as one can
use a (mostly) black-wallpapered GDM theme and desktop.

It would be nice if it were possible to pass directly from the GDM
screen to the desktop wallpaper, without the intermediary black screen.
That way I could make a GDM theme based on my wallpaper and make the
transition seamless.
