Excellent observation! Using the latest and greatest Kubuntu Beta
(installed to my HD), I can elicit the bug by switching from xim to
scim-bridge as you described. Either way Japanese input still doesn't
work.

scim-bridge-client-qt4 0.4.14-2ubuntu3
scim-bridge-client-qt 0.4.14-2ubuntu3
scim-bridge-agent 0.4.14-2ubuntu3

I don't know which input method ought to preferred (xim or scim-bridge)
by KDE applications since neither of them currently seems to work, but
I'm guessing it's supposed to be scim-bridge since that was the case in
Hardy Heron.

Since this bug doesn't appear by default (the user has to manually
switch the input method), it would perhaps be better to actually get CJK
input working first, then address this bug if it's still a problem.
