THAT WAS IT Installed gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg and it all worked. Sorry but on the face of it, why should I have installed something name "bad" or "ugly" in my system if all the rest worked ... I will look into the description of those packages.
