Did you modify the default configuration. If so can you please attach
the file /etc/default/hal ?
If noticed another message in your logfile:
"polkit-auth: This operation requires the system message bus and ConsoleKit to
be running"
There is a test for dbus in hal.init but not for consolekit so maybe
consolekit was not there.
If you're able to reproduce this issue can you run the following command:
ps aux|grep console-kit-daemon
