The good news if your drive might not be completely dead (yet) as long as the following don't keep increasing after you run badblocks a few times. Though you may want to back everything up on the hard drive and run badblocks in write (destructive) mode.
5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 005 Pre-fail Always - 28 196 Reallocated_Event_Count 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 35 Once you have run badblocks in destructive mode then 196 should go back to 0 (I if remember correctly) and 5 should increase by some amount. This has some more information. http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/badblockhowto.html Just make sure to definitely back up your data before running badblocks in write mode since it will overwrite your drive. Also when you do run it in write mode make sure your system is booted off another hard drive (or cd) and make sure the one you are testing does not have any mounted partitions including the swap partition. Sometimes live cds mount the swap partition automatically to allow you to run more programs.
