After further experimenting, I discovered a sort-of fix. Here's what I did (this worked for me but you may be able to get away with fewer steps): 1. Disable visual effects. 2. Enable visual effects using proprietary FLGRX driver and restart. 3. Disable FLGRX but keep on using visual effects (with FOSS driver).
