I've solved one of my problems.  My PCI nVidia card was preventing any
of the Ubuntu installers from working (even the alternate installer).
Once I removed that video card, my integrated video card seemed to work
fine, and the 8.04 installer worked again.  However, upon trying the
8.10 installer (bootable CD), it gives me a ATA2 ErrNo -16 error and the
installer stops working.

I'm using an old Dell 2350 right now, and I'm pretty sure this system
hates Ubuntu (especially trying to upgrade to new versions).

I wish that the upgrade to new versions of Ubuntu would fail more
gracefully.  It completely destroyed my computer. =(
