Sorry, the machine was really borked, it wouldn't even mount the drive with write permissions. So I went ahead and did the recovery-mode boot. I think I picked the option to recover the packages. dk something maybe. Well now the machine boots into 8.10 like nothing was ever wrong. I didn't do your suggested commands since xubuntu-desktop is clearly installed.
