Removing the words quiet and splash had no effect. The system still hangs on boot up at the fsck check and takes a control D to resume. This happens with Kubuntu 8.10 now. Here is the contents of the file /var/log/fsck/checkfs: Log of fsck -C -R -A -a Tue Nov 4 07:22:56 2008
