I have changed a few of the options of the nvidia driver and also updated the kernel and so far have not had the same problem. If it happens again I will try disabling Xinerama. It isn't a long term solution though as I need to be able to move windows across screens.
I enabled the option which shows the location of the mouse when control is pressed and when I had this problem last time it located the mouse in the upper left hand corner of the left most screen regardless of where the mouse actually was. -- Confusing error message printed when X locks up.
