You should be able to remove most of those packages except libavahi-
glib1 and not get the effect of removing most of the desktop.
I don't think that it's ubuntu-desktop actually at fault here, just that
the packages built with avahi support (most of gnome probably) all
require libavahi-glib1, and the parts that don't require the parts that
do. If you want Ubuntu packages to be built without avahi support you
probably want to start a dialogue with the desktop team (ubuntu-
[EMAIL PROTECTED]).
avahi is not enabled by default, just installed. So there is perhaps not
as much risk as you may think.
