Hi Teej, I apologise for my ignorance and thank you for your continued
patience. I am attaching my /etc/apt/sources.list

When libdvdcss2 is not installed, I 'open' the DVD 'with' VLC
(0.9.4-1ubuntu3). This opens VLC: the VLC window displays 'cdrom0' then
this black screen stops after a second but VLC remains open. I then go
to 'Media' -> Open Disc -> Play. This time the same happens, but the
film title's name is displayed instead of 'cdrom0'. I try a third time,
this time 'Media' -> Open Disc -> select 'no DVD menus' ->Play. This
time the video does not start at all, and the audio is jumpy.

Instead, if I open with Totem, the video starts but hangs on the initial
image, the audio is jumpy then after about 7-8 sec I get 'An error
occurred', 'Fail to connect stream: OK'.

Finally Mplayer: There is no video at all, but the sound is nowhere near
as jumpy.

None of the three players asked me to install any decoding software.
Maybe they have done in the past and I have declined? But surely there
should be some kind of option to get the correct codec?

So, this brings me to libdvdcss2 (1.2.10-0.2medibuntu1) which has a star
on it in Synaptic (indicating it's new). After manually installing this
the following occurs:

VLC: Coping the first two methods described earlier, exactly the same
happens now. The third way (selecting 'no DVD menus' makes the film
playable normally. This however skips directly to the film (not really
very good). This time, when the film starts, the following is displayed
shortly on the screen: 'dvdsimple:///dev/scd0'.

Totem: The main film plays instantly, but I am unable to access any
menus from the menu bar.

Mplayer: The main film plays instantly, but I am unable to access any
menus from the menu bar, when I try, the main film restarts itself.
