I solved, it's working for me, now.

Just run "alsamixer -Dhw" and double check that the PCM volume is not
set to 0. Mine was.

Just raise it and you'll hear sounds againg.

So the error messages from pulseaudio were not related to this, it
seems.

I'm a bit surprised; some of the gurus reading the bug reports could
have warned us.

There are plenty of bug reports of no sound after upgradind to Intrepid
Ibex.
