** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeon

I upgraded my radeon drivers on my laptop using the ones from Intrepid-
proposed, and the X server no longer displays on the laptop screen when
booting up. I can see the splash screens and the vt's, but get a black
screen when the login screen should be displaying. This is a lit-up
- black by the way (as opposed to the screen being turned off).
+ black by the way (as opposed to the screen being turned off). I have a
+ Radeon Mobility x1400 (01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI
+ Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X1400)

The computer still responds, for example if I type in my login details I
see the hard-drive light flash and services that should start with the
logged in session start, so the computer has not crashed. If I plug in
an external screen the login screen displays correctly on this, so it is
only the laptop screen that is not displaying anything.

This happened with the most recent update between the versions listed
below. I am attaching the syslogs and Xorg.0.logs for both the broken
  and the working version.

It appears that the radeon driver is no longer loading the dri
correctly, as the first significant difference between the two Xorg logs
  is the following:

  WORKING:
  drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 10, (OK)
  drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci:0000:01:00.0
  drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 10, (OK)

  BROKEN:
  drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device or address)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device or address)
  drmOpenDevice: Open failed
  drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci:0000:01:00.0
  drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 10, (OK)

To get the screen working again I downgraded the package back to the
working radeon version, and reinstalled (modprobe -r && modprobe) the
  radeon module.

  xserver-xorg-video-radeon (WORKING): 1:6.9.0+git20081003.f9826a56-0ubuntu2
