i'm getting this same.

since update of intrepid

One one box, i updated from the previous version during beta. All worked find
until mid/end october.
On another box, i did a clean install.

Both boxes show the same symptoms (quiet static instead of expected
sound)

What is pulse audio ? [I will look that up now and see if i can get a
fix as per Howard]

I don't recall getting it or enabling it, on either box.

This is a serious bug imo as the process to experience it is simply
through getting updates on a previously working system. Imo, an update
to a working system should not cause sound to break.

Clashes of packages or settings should be detected during the update
imo, and the user alerted that if they don't turn off pulseaudio (if
that is indeed the real issue) their sound may not work.

?

Will report back when I find more.
