Ok to update this bug. I have reinstalled Xubuntu and Ubuntu 8.04, downloaded today, both work perfectly regarding the card reader. Both in live mode and installed to the ssd.
I then installed using both unetbootin and the usb creator ubuntu and xubuntu 8.10, the card reader hangs and does not mount.
