To get a more complete printer setup tool under Kubuntu, either use the
CUPS web interface:

http://localhost:631/

Use your username and password when asked for.

Or install the GTK version of system-config-printer:

sudo apt-get install system-config-printer-gnome

Then you can easily assign manufacturer PPDs to your printers.

With lpadmin you have to call

lpadmin -p <queue name> -P LEXT622.PPD

Assigning manufacturer PPDs works only if the PPDs conform the
standards. Check this via

cupstestppd LEXT622.PPD

For setting up your printer as a "Generic PCL 6/PCL XL printer", start
your printer setup tool, click the button for creating a new printer,
then choose your printer from the detected ones, after that choose
"Generuc" as the manufacturer and "PCL 6/PCL XL printer" as the model.
Choose at first "pxlmono" or "pxlcolor" as the driver. If this does not
work, try "hpijs" or "ljet4d". Do you get Duplex with this setup?
