I was having the mouse not responding to mouse event problem reported
here until I disabled Xinerama and started using Twinview. Since I've
made the changes it has been over a week without a lockup. I followed
Randy Wilson instructions from 2008-11-24:

"""Another me too. For me, at most it happens once a day. Nvidia and
Xinerama. I've switched to twinview as Hops mentioned above (sudo
nvidia-settings => display configuration => configuration => configure
=> change from xinerama to twinview) It seems to work the same as
Xinerama except that compiz now works and it does seem snappier."""

$ sudo nvidia-settings

Select "X Server Display Configuration"
Disable the "Xinerama" checkbox. (This may be on the "Configure..." popup. It's
been a week and I don't recall the location.)
On the 'Display' tab select the button "Configure..." and set to "Twinview"

including notifications and popups"

This problem goes away if you disable Xinerama.

This fix may only work if you are using two displays.
