For:

1/ Is a personal preference, that you don't like it, and I didn't select
the naming myself it has been around as long as OOo has been in Ubuntu
at least afaik. And eg 'Spreadsheet' is much more obvious than 'Calc'

2/ It is themeable assuming you have an icon named eg "ooo-writer" in
your theme it will override the icon in the Applications menu as far as
I can tell anyway.
