After some more Googling, I found that this is a known issue with the Cisco VPN client and dual core systems. Running the following command: echo 0 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu1/online ...prior to launching the Cisco VPN client fixes the issue. This is, obviously, not and Ubuntu issue therefore this bug can be closed.
