Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: grub-installer
On my HP 503w (purchased in 2002), Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu will install,
but will not boot. 'GRUB stage 1.5' appears on the screen and nothing
else ever happens. This has been reproduced with 6.06 and 8.10 both the
LiveCD and alternate installers. System contains a Western Digital 40GB
EIDE hard drive and a second Western Digital 80GB EIDE hard drive.
Removing either drive and installing from scratch does not correct the
problem.
Neither guided partitioning nor manual works.
I did install an older Mandriva version (used LILO) and Gentoo (used
LILO) and both worked fine. Since GRUB has known issues with some older
hardware, there should be an option under 'advanced' that will use LILO
instead. I repeat, Linux versions that use the LILO bootloader work
fine, but versions that use GRUB will not boot, EVER.
Expectation: After installation, a bootable system results.
Actual Occurence: After installation, a non-bootable system results.
** Affects: grub-installer (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
