Hmmm, seems annoying. I like to keep my desktop clear and sometimes reboot Ubuntu 8.10 just to clear the clutter i manage to build-up through using different folders over the network here.
As a temporary work-around could you Add To Panel a Drawer applet and have those links/shortcuts in the Drawer? I know its not what you really want but perhaps is 'good enough' in the short-term?
