I did some more debugging. The new driver seems to detect the monitor
resolution in a different way (or at all) compared to the 8xxx series.
It claims that the maximum mode of my TFT is 1280x960 and the 'best fit'
mode is 1024x768. Thus with manually adding the 1280x960 mode, I can get
at least this resolution, which is much better than 1024x768, but still
leaves me with two big black bars.

Detecting monitor resolution through the DVI cable does not seem to work
for me. Ubuntu's xorg detection scripts cannot figure it out at all,
they are only right when I use the VGA cable.

There does not seem to be a way of overriding the detected monitor
resolution any more.
