Are you sure about that, Scott?  Matthew Garrett told me that
libvolume_id, which is part of the udev source package, is used by hald
to identify volumes.

Changes have since been made to udev and I have personally tested that
the volid tool can identify the LifeDrive but I have not had the time to
try to figure out what needs to be done to get hald on board.
