Please re-open, because this bug still exists in a fully upgraded
version of 8.10 and can be easily replicated. Configure to use Compiz in
the "Appearance" program. Un-install all Compiz related packages through
"Synpatic Package Manager". Reboot and there is no window manager.

To fix:

Before un-installing the Compiz packages, set to use "None" in the
"Visual effects" section of the "Appearance" manager.

If Compiz already removed, re-install and then do the above, then un-
install again.
