Okay, some mp3 weren't responding to stripping the v1 tags. Many of my mp3s had APE tags. I ended up using foobar under WINE to remove the APE tags (the script for the linux apetag bulk operations was having trouble with spaces in filenames). Problem went away. Interestingly, on many files I had to remove the APE tags TWICE with foobar (multiple APE tags maybe?)
Even so, why does Rhythmbox have such issues with remnant APE tags, while Amarok and other players don't? (P.S.
