The before-mentioned fix does not work all the time. I have an Asus M3N78 PRO, running only with the onboard NVidia 8300 chipset. On Intrepid, Alsa 1.0.1.7 detects the sound board incorrectly as ALC888 instead of ALC1200. Using the before-mentioned fix, sound only works on every third or forth reboot. I'm using the latest Nvidia 180.22 drivers. I've read that before the kernel upgrade this chipset worked, but that could be heresay.
