Thanks for the reply. I have sound insofar as I can get the system 'beeps'. When I open the volume control from the top panel it is blank - it says 'Volume Control' with File, View and Help, but the content is completely blank (i.e. no sliders or anything). I have searched the net and found some supposed solutions and added the info given in:

Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated. I'm quite new to Xubuntu and not familiar with the jargon. If you want me to get information from the pc then you may need to explain how to do it in words of one syllable.
