I think the xorg.conf generated when the system started up in failsafe
mode specifies "vesa" just because the system was started in failsafe
mode. So I should have changed "vesa" to "savage".

Now my xorg.conf with all the screen parameters does specify "savage",
so the right driver would have been used.

So my next step will be to restart in safe text mode, producing the
default xorg.conf, edit that to specify "savage", reinstall the new
driver xserver-xorg-video-savage 2.2.1+git20081230.aea0496f-
0ubuntu0tormod2, and see what I get.
