** Description changed:

After upgrading from hardy to intrepid RC, I couldn't see my desktop
after logging in. Only the movable mouse cursor was visible. The GDM
failsafe session was working for me.

The /etc/X11/Xsession.d/99x11-common_start script was trying to run:
  /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session --execute x-window-manager

The x-window-manager was linked to /usr/bin/metacity.

I discovered after the upgrade, that I've had a dangling symlink (x
-session-manager) in /etc/alternatives pointing to KDE4 session manager.
Resetting this symlink to point to /usr/bin/gnome-session solved my
  problem.

Now the 99x11-common_start script is running:
  /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/pulse-session
/usr/bin/seahorse-agent --execute x-session-manager
and my GNOME session starts correctly.
