I have the same problem with Ubuntu 9.04 alpha 3

I have only one wifi network (open, with no encryption and visible essid), but
often the gnome applet doesn't attach to it, and list no wifi network
available.
I tried to create a new wifi network with the applet, but it doesn't attach,
but if I open the combo about "Connection" I find the netword essid (I don't
know if this happens because of I tried to create it before), select it and
press "Create" the system get connected.
Usually "sudo iwlist scan" fix the problem, and the networkmanager attach to
network automatically.
