The idea advanced in this thread that the documentation be changed is a
terrible one.  The current manpage  is for the standard grep (aka egrep
fgrep) available in every linux distro that I've worked with.  And why
would ubuntu ever want to distinguish itself by the things it omits that
others include?

Because I have in production scripts using grep -P running on Mandriva,
it complicates moving those servers to ubuntu even though I'm convinced
that in the long-term ubuntu is the way to go.
