1. Something like Parcellite might be good by default, but some might complain. If gnome-clipboard-daemon also solves the problem and doesn't interfere with other clipboard apps, that should be installed by default, since it's less obtrusive. 2. I don't think it has anything to do with Firefox. Are you able to copy and paste from other apps after you've closed them? I thought that was impossible for *all* X apps.
