Sorry Mike, I have no idea where I got the name Thomas from :)

If you attempt to save changes to a network with a name starting with
'Auto' the changes will not be saved.  This should be in the
documentation, if not then you have a valid documentation bug.  For
Network Manager, this is not a bug but rather it is intentional.  To
save your changes, you will need to give the connection a name that does
not begin with "Auto".  "Home", "Ethernet", "Main Connection" are all
valid names that can have changes saved.  You will still see 'Auto eth0'
in Network Manager, that won't go away, but you can choose to connect to
the other one instead.

Please try to set a static IP address again, but this time before saving
change the name of the network, and let us know if that works.
