This was an interesting one... my monitor is 17" LG L1715S. The monitor, dock station and laptop all support DDC and I never had to configure it manually before. So I was a bit confused until I remembered changing the VGA cable - the new cable has no pin 9, and Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector#The_pin_9_problem confirms that some monitors require this signal to be active. It appears that this LG monitor will not send valid DDC data without this pin.. with a different cable it works fine. How odd.
