Thanks for the info you've posted. I just tried upgrading the kernel as
suggested but it didn't like the NVidia drivers (and in basic graphics
mode it wouldn't let me change the brightness, which doesn't auger
well).

I've tried using the xrandr command but this is what happens:

vwil...@hp-pavilion:~$ xrandr --output LVDS --set BACKLIGHT_CONTROL native

  Minor opcode of failed request:  15 ()
  Serial number of failed request:  14
  Current serial number in output stream:  14
vwil...@hp-pavilion:~$ xbacklight
No outputs have backlight property

Any tips on what I'm getting wrong here? Any pointers much appreciated.
It'd be great to get this sorted out, before people's eyes start
bleeding. I don't want to have to go back to Vista.
