There is no update for the plugin (version 0.8.3), but I found out
that you also need GnuRegexp plugin to make it work.

ehm.. I've try with sudo because I have the plugin installed and it
works (the plugin)
in this profile BufferTabs installed automagically the dependent
plugin GnuRegexp but not as user.

most likely ubuntu is not responsible at all, feel free to close the
bug.

but if you want to see another plugin that crashes (both user and sudo
profiles) it's TextAutocompleter.
