It may have to do with the inclusion of the new rt2500 driver in the kernel at
the time the bug started to appear.
The behavior vanishes (= workaround) if I do the following commands before and
after the hotsync.
sudo ifdown wlan0
... then hotsync
sudo ifup wlan0
