** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-driver-nv When using xserver-xorg on Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04 with the nv driver selected I can get the xserver to start (1024x768, 1200 x 1024 or 1600 x1200 24 bit colour) with no problems, however at some point after starting X windows the desktop freezes compleatly, and even the animated cursor stops. Changing the driver to vesa solves the problem but cannot use resolutions higher then 1024 x 768. Most sure way to reproduce this is problem seems to be to open any window then open a couple of terminal windows, sometime it is necesary to try to move a terminal window but usually the system don't last that long before freezing. The only solution appears to be to power off and reboot. It doesn't matter which display, session or window manager is used. I've reproduced the problem with seperate installations of KDE, Gnome and TWM. I have no issues with the same driver using an nVidia 5700 card (in a different box). + Eventually I had to replace the TNT2 card with an nVidia MX4000 card and + am currently using the nVidia binary driver from Ubuntu 8.04, but can + build another system with an nVidia TNT2 if required for further + testing. + Mike T.
