GaryC, this bug is for a different issue. In this bug, the whole system does not lock up, just the rdesktop client. The client can be killed without restarting the system.
Also this is for a connection without VPN. Bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rdesktop/+bug/218308 describes an rdesktop problem involving VPN. Rdesktop 1.6.0 was released in May 2008. As far as I know development is ongoing.
