Is this reproducible say over 10 cycles. Has suspend/hibernate ever
worked in the past, if so which kernel release (cat
/proc/version_signature)?

If this is reproducible it is worth trying the moving to VT-1, press
ctrl-alt-F1, login, and run pm-suspend. This may give us more
information. The flashing caps-lock implies that we are getting a
kernel panic. If the flashing does not start before until an attempt to
switch VT then you might try and login to the machine from another (if
you have one). You would need to install openssh-server (sudo apt-get
install openssh-server) to allow this.
