I've had this issue, but I can reproduce it reliably - when I try to browse my SD card, one of my .dol files (a GameCube executable format) is misidentified as a font, and gnome-thumbnail-font tries to thumbnail it...forever. It pegs my CPU at 100% usage until killed, which is unpleasant on a laptop.
