For the multimedia issue, this might be due to the lack of proper codecs. There 
are some codecs that Ubuntu cannot include by default for legal reasons. See 
this page for details and how to get codecs:

As for third-party applications, you can only install package made for
Ubuntu - usually in the .deb format. Be sure to check the official
repositories. Third parties may or may not have an Ubuntu package
available.
