Some more results of my troubleshooting:
The problem doesn't have to do with the restricted nVidia drivers. I
recently changed from the non-free ("nvidia") driver to the free ("nv")
driver, and the problem still appeared after a while.
What about you, Joachim, are you using the nVidia drivers as well? Which
version?
Also, I've noticed that I don't need to log out and in again to get the
screen to look right. If I just hibernate while the screen is offset, it
looks right again when I resume.
