** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

When performing a task (gnome) needing superuser privileges a password
prompt is offered while the rest of the screen fades darker. The bug
seems to be triggered by this effect, it freezes the system in 1 of 3
  invocations of the password prompt.

The machine is un-ping-able afterwars, only resetting helps.

The same affect occures using radeonhd and fglrx drivers, while windows
vista runs stable on the very same hardware. The vesa drivers is stable,
but i have 2 DVI monitors and the vesa driver lets me use only one.
